Questions about Doula Services:
Q. What is a doula?
A. A doula, is a person who offers judgement-free, non-medical support to birthing individuals and their partners before, during, and after childbirth, by providing information/resources, physical assistance and emotional support.
Having continuous support during labor is associated with improved outcomes for both the birthing person and the babies, along with a variety of other benefits, including lower risk of induction and interventions and less need for pain relief. These benefits are particularly significant when continuous support is provided by someone who is not there as family/friend or as medical staff.
Additionally, a doula is sometimes hired to work with families beyond the postpartum stages, providing continued informational, physical and emotional support, for as long as needed (but most commonly within the first three months).
The goal of a doula is to ensure the birthing person and their partners feel safe and confident before, during, and after birth.
Q. Do you offer discounts?
A. We believe everyone deserves a doula or placenta encapsulation if desired. To accommodate this we offer flexible and customizable payment plans.
We would love to talk to you about what this looks like.
Q. Will you be replacing my partner in the birth room?
A. Absolutely not! A giant part of our job is to support your partner so that they can support you. We can offer suggestions on ways they can assist you throughout the process and if your partner needs a break, we can step in so your support is continuous. You can read about my experience with doula support as a birthing person in a blog post here.
Q. Will we meet before hand?
A. We offer all Birth Doula clients two prenatal meetings. This will give us the chance to get to know one another and go over any concerns, fears or thoughts you have. This gives us a base to find the best tools and resources to share with you. We will also go over birth plans, comfort techniques and a postpartum plan.
Q. What happens if you aren't available when I go into labor?
A. We work in teams in two so you are guaranteed backup is someone who you have met and gotten to know.
Q. I am having a scheduled cesarean birth, would a doula still be helpful?
A. Absolutely! Having a doula present is beneficial no matter what type of birth you are having. We can assist you and your partners to help remind you of your birth plan/preferences and help bring comfort into the hospital. We can also support you through establishing breastfeeding and newborn care. We also offer Postpartum Doula services to help once your baby is here so you can focus on healing, bonding and integrating your new family.

Q. What benefits can I expect to receive from placenta encapsulation?
A. Reported benefits include:
Help with the hormonal shift from pregnancy and avoiding The Baby Blues, Postpartum Depression and Postpartum Anxiety.
Quicker healing, earlier end of postpartum bleeding and return of uterus to pre-pregnancy state, with less cramping.
An increase in production of milk.
An increase in energy, some say similar to a cup (or more) of coffee.
A more balanced, calm and even mood.
Reduction in anxiety, weepy-ness or sadness.

People have experienced placenta pills helping tremendously with postpartum muscle strength, especially if you had a long labor, if you lost a lot of blood or if you are recovering from a cesarean birth.
